I grew up in the small northern Minnesota town of Grand Rapids, and after completing high school was offered an Air Force ROTC scholarship at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD), where I went on to graduate with a BA and second lieutenant bars. I completed four years of military service as an Air Force missile launch officer in conjunction with earning a master’s degree, followed by a bachelor of accounting after completing my military service. Later, I accepted another government job and moved to Colorado.
I’ve climbed a few mountains in Colorado and elsewhere over the years (although I prefer less rigorous pursuits these days, like exploring/experiencing the Galapagos Islands or floating the Grand Canyon), and during May 2006 I tackled Mount Everest, climbing to over 25,000 feet on the north/Tibet side of the mountain. I’ve also written two books about some of my climbs and other travels.
One of the unexpected benefits of having been to Mount Everest is I generally get asked to speak to students (mostly elementary and middle school age) several times a year, where I have the privilege of introducing students not just to climbing and the wilder/wilder world, but more importantly to the related life lessons, which is the real payoff for having suffered through a Mount Everest attempt.
During recent years, I’ve also been spending more time “exploring” our nation’s largest cities, and find that I am most attracted to places like Washington, D.C. (where a person could spend weeks/months just at the Smithsonian), Chicago (the Museum of Natural History is incredible!), and (of course) our own Denver (which has an excellent Museum of Nature & Science too).
I work as an examiner for the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), an independent financial regulatory agency of the Federal government responsible for chartering, supervising, examining, and insuring Federal credit unions, and very much enjoy working with the generally selfless people who work at our not-for-profit credit unions.
As I reflect on what I’ve done with my life so far, I come to the conclusion that the most satisfying aspects of it have been the opportunities I’ve had to “give back,” to do things that benefit more than just myself. I endeavor to surround myself with selfless co-workers, friends, and acquaintances whenever possible, and hope you do too.

I am pretty healthy and fit and do exercise and play sports like tennis often. I do practice a healthy juice diet along with my regular foods.
