A couple years ago I was driving past this little creek and I thought to myself “If I was a little kid, that creek would be a blast to explore." Then I realized the creek is the same. So what’s different? My perception of the creek is the only thing that has changed. Happiness is a form of traveling, not a destination to arrive at. We each choose how we react to what we perceive. I am extremely active. It is hard for me to sit here, even now, and type this. When I was 21 I broke my back and went from 175Lbs, full time soccer player, to being bed ridden and gaining 100 pounds in 2 and a half years. I'm now at 185 and I work out 4 times a week. I also go mountain bike riding around Prescott almost every day. Like I said, I'm extremely active. I also believe the ability to be happy while doing nothing is a choice. I can lie on the grass and stare at clouds all day.
I grew up Mormon and wound up marrying the first girl I started dating after high school. I'm not a member of the Mormon faith anymore. I grew a lot from my marriage. . I couldn’t have learned what I needed to any other way. I've had to learn the hard way, humility, charity, kindness, forgiveness, and hard work. I work hard for what I have now. I live a pretty minimalist life. I don’t enjoy watching TV unless I feel like I have accomplished enough during the day. I believe handheld electronics are distracting us from the beauty found all around us.
I'm not religious anymore but I am very spiritual. I enjoy going to Sedona and meditating. Every day I try to be a better man. Recognizing your own faults is paramount to individual growth. As far as the rest goes, I love books. The smell of them, the weight--even those little ink smudges when you hold a book too long in your hands. News articles go on about how "books are dead," but I can't imagine them ever becoming obsolete. I'm a big fan Isaac Asimov, Douglas Adams, Mark Twain, J.R.R. Tolkien, and the poetry of e.e. cummings, to name a few. I also think everyone should read To Kill a Mockingbird.
I'm a big movie fan, but documentaries and independent films will always be my first choices. Some of my favorite directors: Quentin Tarantino, Billy Wilder, Akira Kurosawa, David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Errol Morris, Terry Gilliam, Charlie Kaufman, Wes Anderson, the Coen Brothers, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. I'd probably be happy on a desert island with only the complete works of Terry Gilliam, though.
