I’m a 6’4” whitewater river guide, an avid student of cultures foreign and domestic, my own included, a metalsmith, gardener, machinist, fisherman and/or handyman depending on the season and mood. I'm happiest in alien lands on some remote river scouting a route I've never seen before. Guess that makes me comfortable with novelty, indeed I seem to thrive on it. On the other hand, I take pride in doing things more familiar with all the artistry I can muster.
I’m financially comfortable living alone in my own home in the SF Bay area, at least during the winter. I’ve been single for over 20 years after divorce ended a 15 year marriage which left me with a wonderful daughter.
Since retiring from my first career (32 years as a middle school science teacher in San Francisco) in 2001, I’ve been a whitewater guide on the American River, a seasonal job that keeps me in the Sierra foothills from April or May to September living in a camper shell near the river. Working there with young people helps keep me au courant, optimistic and relatively fit. September through October is a professional guide’s playtime so I usually do at least two multi-day trips on rivers in Oregon, Idaho or Alaska. It should be obvious that I love the outdoors, whether on a river, camping in mountains or deserts, fishing or just cruising over to the beach to watch storm surf. I spend the off season in or near Marin county, fishing, traveling internationally (usually both at the same time), reclaiming my garden from its annual summer of neglect, and playing with my two grandsons.
A native of the SF Bay Area, I love the excitement of living near a major world class city with its diverse arts and culture (though I confess I rarely actually go into the City) yet far enough away to enjoy the quiet of the small community I call home. I’m a pretty good cook (and dishwasher), both at “home” or in camp, especially “ethnic” foods (Turkish, Thai, Chinese and Mexican) and even know how to fold fitted sheets (I don’t actually fold mine, but I know how!). I’m also a bluegrass freak with a taste for the classics and grand opera. Someday I might get good enough on my banjo to pick more than 3 old fiddle tunes (marginally more socially acceptable than picking one’s nose). Gotta have dreams, no?
I’d really like to find a lady who can enjoy some of the same things I do, who can join my somewhat peripatetic lifestyle and, most important, has a well developed sense of humor (she’ll need it!). Literacy, interests of her own (that we might or might not share), financial independence and a willingness to travel to less than 5 star locales would be plusses.
