I have a high level of energy and like to keep active and busy. I seek out intellectual challenges, and am interested in unusual ideas and perspectives. I am cursed with a high IQ, which leads to a compulsion to study and learn about that which I don’t yet know. I am a recovered perfectionist.
I enjoy new and different activities and have a high need for variety in my life. Intellectual excitement and stimulation appeal to me. I love laughter and have a great sense of humor. I particularly enjoy the beauty I find in music, art and nature. I truly enjoy people and being with people, yet at the same time, I value greatly my time alone.
I have hunted, fished, hiked, camped, canoed, sailed, and played golf and tennis. I am a plumber, electrician, carpenter and furniture maker. I am a photographer, actor and writer. I am a teacher, thinker, researcher and philosopher.
I have more inner strength than I ever imagined, finding it during the twenty-five months of the illness and the inevitable loss of my love in 1997. We had a wonderful, yet brief, “little life” together, and she will always be a happy part of me. Not as a benchmark by which to measure others, but as a reminder that happiness has been in my life and can be again with another unique woman.
So what do I do with my life? I practiced law for many years, but I burned out on it and became a volunteer lobbyist for a health nonprofit. I moved to San Francisco 7 years ago for a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship in health policy research. Now I do policy research and I have two faculty appointments to teach policy advocacy to health sciences and law students. My new career is much more exciting, challenging and rewarding than practicing law ever was. Being around all of the bright young minds keeps my mind young too! I enjoy the challenges of the work I do, and don't see myself completely retired.
Much of the rest of my time is spent in reading, stimulating conversation, attending live theater, fine dining, gourmet cooking, art collecting, visiting museums, and traveling. My favorite composers are Beethoven and Brubeck. I belong to an international gourmand group that takes my love of fine dining to great heights. To get some balance, I watch sports, primarily football and golf.
I have fun, regardless what I am doing.
In personal relationships, I have found that friendship, compatibility and chemistry are very important to me. I particularly enjoy a strong-willed, intelligent, independent woman who has a high level of self-confidence, self-esteem and sense of direction, as long as she can be feminine. Loving fun and having a good sense of humor are essential.
I am a giver, not a taker. I am an old-fashioned Southern gentleman and hopeless romantic.
