Full of myself, I probably lost most of the audience before the sentence ended; which was OK, for as Groucho Marx famously said, why would I want to belong to a club that would have me as a member? And oh! the company I was keeping: astrologers, tantric threesomes, lovers of sunsets and "people," self-actualized bodyworkers who played No Games and carried No Baggage. (Anyone who's reached middle-age w/out baggage is no one you want to know.)
Nonetheless and improbably, I did meet a few fine women, as interesting as anyone you'd encounter at the Cosmos Club. After a long, one-sidedly monogamous relationship that ultimately collapsed, here I am again, chastened, resilient, wiser, less bumptious, still hopeful. (Hope, you know, is the thing with feathers.) Also still reading, writing, editing, teaching a slightly different course each year, as excited by my garden as I was back then, and still traveling now & then. (The relentless pace at which our lovelorn brethren travel -- or hope to travel -- makes one wonder when they have time to meet their Matches.) For the most part I live comfortably, though of course with a social conscience appropriate to Marin County.
But enough about him. I'm looking to meet a thoughtful, tender, slender, unpretentious companion with whom to share ballet (viewing, not dancing), jazz concerts, good movies, late dining (or maybe not-so-late) and good wine, pursuits of curiosity.... and the pleasures of the senses.
That's more than specific enough; I'd expect my companion to have a lot of her own ideas.
