I am currently very much at home in California although it was a huge adjustment for me when I left Canada to attend the University of California at Santa Barbara. I was raised in Toronto after my parents moved there from Greece when I was three years old. Maybe warm climate was in my gene pool because I hated the long, frigid winters so when it came time to apply for college, I chose California. Still, going from a Catholic high school to a politically charged campus environment during the early РІР‚в„ў70 was a quantum leap. In the end, I decided to stay, do graduate studies and find meaningful employment.
As a college faculty member, I have had a purposeful life guiding young people to discover themselves and their place in our world. They stay in touch letting me know of milestones in their lives and often sending their children in for guidance. IРІР‚в„ўve worked with three generations in some families! My career has brought me together with many extraordinary people and I feel fulfilled emotionally and financially. But on the personal front, life has been wrought with hurdles and challenges; many of them painful, some of them resulting in unexpected happiness. When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, I decided to take her back to Greece. I reconnected with cousins I hadnРІР‚в„ўt seen in 50 years and we joked about not having called Oprah to film our reunion.
Well, I have gone back to Greece since then and have discovered my love for travel. I have gone to several parts of Mexico as well as to Italy, Malta, Hawaii, the Caribbean Islands and the Panama Canal. I enjoy the experience of different lifestyles, food, cultures, and different perspectives. However, all experiences are even more enjoyable when shared with someone close; someone who can add another dimension, another layer of understanding.
After a long and satisfying career, I look forward to slowing down and living at a more relaxed pace. I will have time to devote to a relationship with someone who is health conscious, civic minded and intelligent. I value formal education but a keen curiosity and a desire to continue learning are priceless. That person should share some of my own attributes; they should be honest, light spirited, joyful and able to care deeply for friends and family. It's okay if our interests aren't all alike as long as we share some important ones. Finally, I realize that all the facts may line up and still there may be no spark between two people.
