Internet dating is an innovation with obvious and demonstrable potential, but the intimidation factor to those of us who are voluntarily techno-phobic is very high. Much to tell about myself, and never enough time to compose something at once authentic and enticing without sounding like advertising copy. "Ask me later" is a cop-out, and at my age and stage of life, any short of transparency is just a waste of everyone's time. So here's the nickle tour: I am a 5th generation Californian, who has traveled and worked elsewhere, but cannot imagine living in another part of the country, except, perhaps, Hawaii. I was raided in teh Pasadena area in comfort and privilege I never appreciated until I was an adult. Eight years at an all-boys prep school, private colleges, an abortive law school career, bouncing around in my twenties, and a very fun, but ultimately unsatisfying decade of promiscuity interspersed with months, sometimes years, of serial monogamy led me into teaching. Five years of that "fulfilling career" (read: borderline impoverishment) led to two decades in a specialized business niche, the last 12 of which have been as a self-employed hazardous waste disposal broker. Don't ask, unless you can't sleep. I also enjoy high-end private tutoring of select high school and undergraduate students. I have made and lost large amounts of money along the way, often painfully, but through these experiences I have come to appreciate the truly valuable parts of my life: the purr of the tomcat sleeping on my head every night for the past 15 years, the smell of the puppy snogging me awake before sunrise, the satisfaction of jobs well done for others (and, yes, I mean the cat box before she wakes, and the dinner she never expected. I cook 300 nights a year), the look of gratitude when bathing a parent on his or her deathbed, and the glance and touch of a good woman who has seen me at my very worst and stayed around anyway.
