Overall I would describe me as a curious person, someone who wants to know what makes thw world go round and makes people tick. And I have an impish and somewhat anti-authoritarian streak, like to laugh and pun, and at times to play what I call verbal ping-pong. I don't drink much, so wine tasting is not one of my major hobbies.
As for religion and spirituality, I do not need a higher power to appreciate the world around me. Nature -- the stars, the Southwest, a polished slab of granite, a spider web with dew, the love of a dog -- that is food for my soul. Religion is not a taboo, but proselytizing and astrology are, and I probably won't go to many church services. That doesn't mean I am not curious about religion; I just don't want to be connected to some church or faith.
When I see the pictures in the profiles, I wonder what I really see. Some tell stories; others look decieving. I wonder for myself: what do you see in that person; why does it attract you. I haven't found an answer, so I keep looking. I believe that the listed lines in the profiles really do not tell very much. One needs to meet either in person, or by more contact via the net.
Likes: I used to love to cook, and do do photography when traveling, and often in the winter. Cold weather is not a bane for me. Now I read a lot, do the NYT crossword (now Mo - Th only), and the LAT one on Sundays; not bad for a foreigner. As for interests, many: all natural sciences, especially math, physics and astronomy. The American Southwest, with its geology; the history of Native Americans. Languages, especially etymology. Classical music, and folk musik from around the world. Reading is mostly non-fiction, although some Hillerman novels have snuck in. Last books read: 1000 years of Jewish history in Germany, Tesla, Tecumseh, W.Saffire. Last concerts: Mozart's Requiem in the Hollywood Bowl (courtesy of my daughter), The Messiah. I love talking with someone who appeals to me, to share issues and thoughts. Sports: Soccer (I used to be a referie for youth soccer), some football (GB Packers), many of the non-popular sports (track & field, F1, essentially all the Olympic sports, but not violent ones). At this stage in life I am looking for a partner to share mutual interests and laughs, to talk, look at the stars, enjoy the world around us.
Personally I would characterize myself as quite liberal, but not dogmatic, and very curious about many things. Just finished teaching a course "The joy of Mathematics" for those who hate it or have a phobia; now doing a course "The Joy of Science".

For many years I worked in child protective services for Los Angeles County. Now that I'm retired from employment for money, I like to work on things which matter to me. These include fitness, improving my Spanish and normalizing relations between the United States and Cuba. My father and his parents lived there during World War II. While I was born in the U.S., I have always been interested in Cuba. Now I travel there for journalistic and research work. In the spring of 2011 I spent three months on the island.
This service is very positive-oriented, which is very nice. It doesn't ask for dislikes, but I have a few: racism, sexism, homophobia and petty bickering. Also movies filled with lots of gratuitous violence. This site doesn't allow one to explain one's political views. I'm beyond liberal or very liberal, but frankly and openly leftist. I've also been known to laugh at leftist and at my own occasional sillinesses.
To me, the most important quality in a restaurant isn't so much the FOOD, but rather the quality of the QUIET, so we can carry on a conversation. Oh, I can and do often cook at home.

Every day of my life I'm deeply grateful for, and very conscious of, the good things which have come to me. Some by accident, others by my own efforts. Oh, yes, of the nice things about being retired is that on days and times when I feel like doing nothing at all, I can simply do nothing at all if that's what I want to do.
