(1) I make homemade holiday presents with the kids to give to people because I believe in giving of yourself not just your money,
(2) I do not buy artwork at Target but paint canvases and put my favorite quotes on them to hang around my house because I believe that my life should be filled with meaning,
(3) I learned to snowboard recently at 40 and couldn't sit without pain for a few weeks because I believe in always learning/doing new things - never stale,
(4) My parents have plenty of money and still go up north every spring and spend 2 weeks on snowshoes taping trees and making maple syrup and sitting all day ujnder the tall maples and feeling very full of everything good in life - I find that horribly impressive and it is the quality of character that I search for.
(5) My favorite thing in the world is swimming in ice cold mountain streams and second is going in the sauna then hole-in=the-ice in northern michigan ... whole family does it... standing there under the northern lights dripping wet in the snowy desolate quiet north ... makes your entire body electric I gotta say,
(6) I love contrast in life ... best food of my life was after a 2-day backpacking trip in cold rain and that burger and beer still makes me smile ... hard to enjoy the comforts if you are never uncomfortable,
(7) I want all of it in life ... not just to pretend that it is all good and perfect but all of it ... all of the imperfections, This is why I love to camp ... it is inconvenient and uncomfortable and messy and simple, which is everything that is real in life
(8) I talk with the person next to me on the airplane and believe firmly in finding people of value in my life just about anywhere I go
(9) I took my kids camping over Thanksgiving, baked a pumpkin pie over the campfire, hiked the start of the AT in Georgia ... not sure you can get more thankful in life than having all of that.
(10) I still think a day at the lake... waterskiing all morning and napping in the hammock with a beer in hand and the smoker cooking something tasty while the sun sneaks through the tall trees to drench you and the wind rocks you slightly sideways while the boats blast music rushing back and forth ... is some version of perfection in life. I lived like that before coming down here and still dream of it. Ahhhh... good stuff.
(11) Putting on a pack and trekking through Thailand, hitching rides and sleeping in random places, is still top on my vacation wish list ... well that or laying on the beach in the carribean after snorkeling all day ...hmmm, hard to pick.
