I was born and raised in South America. I'm the youngest of seven siblings and daughter of two amazing parents of mixed heritage (part black and part Asian). I Came to the US right after graduating from college. Went to college here too. Learned English very fast after realizing that language and identity are tightly interwoven, and because I'm good at learning languages. I'm the mother of two wonderful boys, who also have a loving father. We co-parent, and divide the time with our children. I enjoy the simple things in life. It doesn't matter what I do, but rather whom I'm doing it with. I'm very passionate about my job, but I also like to have fun, play with my children, travel, do yoga, sing and dance. My friends (real friendships, the ones that take years to develop) and family are very important to me. They are my core and make my life much more rounded. I've been in California for 18 years so feel like I have two homes: the Bay Area which has been home for most of my adult life, and the home I'm originally from (London, England). My friends would call me outgoing, funny, and fun-loving but I do enjoy quiet time too. I like going out with friends, but am not averse to quiet nights in sharing a good bottle of vino and talking 'til late. I firmly believe the company you keep is more important than the surroundings and with the right person you will have a great time anywhere.
Everybody in the Bay Area seems really outdoorsy to a big city girl like myself, and while I can appreciate the beauty of the mountains I don't have a natural urge to climb them or bike down them. But ... I do have an open mind and am game to try anything non-life threatening.
I am a fairly busy person, my biggest job being mum to three kids who live with me half the time (they are 15, 12, and 8). I am also a graduate student studying for my MLIS degree, and I work part time in a law library in San Francisco. I was a stay at home mum for many years but am transitioning back into the working world (2nd career!) while still trying to be available as often as possible to my kids.
I love to travel! My family are all in the UK so I travel to London 1-2 times per year to visit (and yes, I do still have an English accent in case you were wondering!) I've been to many European countries and traveled all over the US, though there are still lots of places on my bucket list. I'm ready to start exploring Asia and South America, but my top three most wanted are Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand.
Moving 6,000 miles away from my family and friends in my early 20s forced me to become fiercely independent and self sufficient and there's not much I won't attempt to fix around the house by myself (except wiring - I'll always call the experts on that one!) While I don't need a guy to take care of me, there are times it would be nice to kick back and be treated like a queen while somebody else mans the tools. But until Mr Wondeful comes along, I'll continue to unplug my own blocked drains, fix the running toilet, and jump start the dead car battery... :)
So what am I looking for in a match?? First of all, coming out of a 20 year relationship/marriage means I'm not in a giant hurry to stroll down the aisle anytime soon! However, I do miss having a companion, someone to take trips with, go out for a beer with, hang out with on a Sunday afternoon - you get the picture. Languages and literature fascinate me, French in particular. I also speak a smattering of other languages (Swedish, Japanese, and German). I also speak Spanish pretty well.
I lived in France for several years as a college student and later a grad student, and IРІР‚в„ўve traveled a lot in Europe, as well as visited Asia. In this country, I lived in upstate New York as a student and later taught college in Connecticut and Vermont for several years. However, I keep coming back to the Bay Area where I grew up. Nothing beats this place for climate, culture, and natural beauty. Even more importantly, living here allows me to be close to family and good friends.
I'm comfortable spending time alone, but I also like to meet up with friends for dinner, a movie, a play, coffee/tea, a walk, a concert, and I keep in touch with friends who live far away. . .
Music is important to me, and live music is always preferable. My tastes run more towards classical, folk, acoustic, but I also like some popular music (Adele, for instance). I've sung in a number of choruses, and I always have a tune running through my head.
I have (what I consider) a healthy wariness of the digital revolution now underway. I've steered clear of and do not own a smartphone, for better or for worse. In my opinion, we currently have too much "connectedness and not enough real, meaningful bonds with other people in our life. I would much prefer to meet people in person in a more natural setting, rather than through an online site.I imagine I have now eliminated over 90% of my readers... So be it!
What sort of person am I looking for? Of course, it would be great to share interests, but more importantly, I'm looking for someone with whom I "connect" well (can't avoid that word, it seems!).
