Love to read – mostly short stories lately. I write an occasional column for the local paper - mostly liberal political stuff. Makes me feel that I am actually doing something to make a difference and it forces precision and learning.
I like to make things: wood and metal. Like to dance when the mood strikes. Comfortable in front of a large group of people. I like kids. Taught high school for a while and have many fond memories.

I will be soon be in Brazil for a few weeks, but still online so write if you are interested. I bought some land (125 acres) there last year on the Rio Negro just outside of a town called Novo Airao, Amazonas. famous for their pink fresh water dolphins. I put in a road, a cpl small houses, a well, a bunch of fruit trees, and what not in this year. On a trip to the Amazon a cpl of years ago I fell in love with the place. I think it really is stunning. The property is mostly old growth with a zillion kinds of trees but the old woman I bought it from raised 7 kids raising manioc on the part next to the river which is where I am doing the building. This trip I plan to build a cpl of greenhouses, improve the water system, put in a septic system and hopefully get a slab in for a future house. I have dreams of making a small eco-resort there one day but that is on the one step at a time plan. I will be doing experiments growing various plants by putting charcoal in with the dirt to retain the nutrients. I belong to an organization called the International Biochar Initiative whose intent is to fight global warming by sequestering carbon in the soil, which also has proven beneficial especially in areas of high rainfall in helping improve the soil. It all got started by discoveries of plots of "terra preta" in the Amazon in areas close to my place. Google it if you are interested.
I have done a lot of traveling around the world and have found that on the whole Brazilians are the friendliest and most outgoing people around to strangers, and non-strangers for that matter.
Also own land in Costa Rica - on the Pacific coast. One within walking distance to beach. Other on a ridge with a 10 mile whitewater view half of which is a turtle sanctuary, Macaws nesting in the old growth, calm ocean breezes, and a stream running along the back of it.
Oh, and I don't live in Berkeley.... yet. I have some land in Mendocino county where I am finishing building a house and plan to also get a place in Berkeley.

Date people from United States. Starting last year, I find myself with plenty of time to spend on pleasant activities as opposed to a career-driven lack of time before. Now, I am semi-retired working about half time for the university.
Like most of us, I am looking for a woman to do things together with like going out for dinner, traveling to distant places (in the past year, I have been to Mongolia three times, to Sweden twice, and to Rwanda once), going for hiking/skiing in the Sierras on weekends, playing cards (Bridge), watching good netflix movies in the evenings etc.
To combat boredom, I live partially in the Bay Area, partially in South Lake Tahoe. I enjoy taking the train up to Tahoe for the weekend and return to the Bay Area for the week. In the mountains, I ski in winter and sail in summer, although this past summer the sail boat has stayed in the back yard because of my travel.
Like many scientists in the Bay Area I am foreign born but have spent the better part of my life in the Bay Area. My grown children make fun of me for not pronouncing words like "foreigner" correctly; my daughter says I am one of these d---n foreigners who never learn how to speak properly (my native language is Swedish although I was born in Finland).
Character wise, friends say that I am a "nice guy"; one of my sisters says I am a kind and generous man, my other sister used to say that I am very "masculine" whatever that means. To balance these positive statements, I have also heard from people that I have a very strong personality but I think I this characteristic is modified; at 62, my rough edges have become a lot softer. Otherwise, if somebody asks me how old I feel, the answer is still 39.

Now the kids are grown-- people to be proud of. (Secretly happy that era of pre-dawn carpools, stinky athletic gear, Russian dwarf hamsters, and lost hermit crabs is over, huh?) I have to admit, there's never been a "rescue kitty" I didn't love.Even the cross-eyed ones, with Siamese ancestry, who refused to enter the house unless it was through a window with a robin clutched in their maw. Maybe there are grandkids for you? None yet for me, that era will come soon enough. Off the record, somewhere in the time after retirement but before travel and the "wisdom plane", I'm considering getting a dog. It's GREAT if you already have one.
What about our parents? They're like the NEW kids now! Are you with me on this one? Been over the river and through the woods lately? I have. Bought the hybrid for so many trips to the nursing home that I started wondering if I was paying for the Richmond-San Rafael bridge. But I fell in LOVE, with the car radio and NFL football. Off season radio = NPR. David Brancaccio balance my portfolio. A day without Car Talk is a very sad day. If you've got the savvy, humor, and brains of the Click and Clack brothers, I want your number. Honda of Oakland will deal with the car. Well, THAT era's over for me. I just about collapsed into Netflix I was so tired. How about you? What's next?
Now WE'RE the old folks. REALLY? Not really. Blonde trumps gray at least for another decade.What's in a hair color? It's all about attitude. I'm seeing a window of opportunity, an opening breeze, fresh air carrying a cheerful melody -- errr, or is that a rockin' riff? Have MORE FUN! Cut out of work early. (Indian summer brings on this behavior. I've bolted early to drive 50 miles for a decent sunset and dinner at Stinson Beach).
I am looking for the partner who wants to share his bucket list with me. You've seen joy and you've seen sorrow, but there is so much more life to be lived. I am up for healthy, positive, life affirming adventures whether in the winding alleys of Barcelona, or the dangerously sinuous pathways of Walnut Creek. Some of my quirks-- Hmmm, I'm still running off to work. Love this job, but it takes up 9 hours a day. I get uptight about leaving the garden neglected. That does not mean that cooking is a lost art. It just means that quality cooking is reserved for weekends and your birthday.

Striving was fun, but now it's time now to sit back, relax, and take stock of all that went before.
