The task is difficult, since we have to find a way to overcome the greed and hubris of an economic system that demands constant growth for shareholder profit, while overlooking the obvious limit of the planet's material resources. These are dire words for a personality profile, but this is who I am and I can only say that it takes a sense of optimism, mixed with humor, to know the gravity of this dilemma, and still wake up every morning, grateful for the opportunity to improve the situation.

I was born in New York City of first generation parents. Their parents, Russian Jews, fled Czarist Russia to come to America at the turn of the 20th century. The streets of New York were still lined with local shops and sidewalk vendors selling produce. The cobblestone accentuated the sounds of the horse’s hooves and wagon wheels of the ragman, iceman, and knife sharpening van. There was no color TV, in fact, there was no TV. It was a time before calculators, computers, and cell phones. In the 50’s at age eight I remember moving to Brooklyn about a mile from Coney Island. A breeze would pick-up after six, while strolling down the streets in the early evening all the apartments had their windows open, and the air was filled with the sound of the radios tuned to the Brooklyn Dodger’s game. They were lovingly referred to as the Bums.
My father worked in New York City with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Dad graduated from George Washington Law which at the time I hadn’t realized was some feat considering he held down a full time job and had a devoted wife and two kids, me being the youngest by four years. My parents were high school sweethearts and remained together for sixty years til death did them part. I figure they’re probably together again – just not here. As a child, I probably suffered from a lack of neglect, and even now at times; although puerile, I still reminisce and miss my childhood and the protection afforded by my parents.
Every few years we continued to move as my father was promoted, and I soon found myself on Long Island entering high school in the late fifties. That entailed: cars and dating, sports, color TV, and Rock & Roll. My music teacher was a golfer. At school, one day, he told us, Rock & Roll was a fad and wouldn’t last more than a couple of years. I’m not sure if he was a musician, �cause most- the-time he talked about golf, maybe he’d done better teaching golf to wolves. In any case, this new music was a spiritual tonic to us, as if by divine intervention, the stuffy and straight Eisenhower years were developing some liberated zones. Our family was like so many families of immigrant society, measured, in large part, by one’s education and position in the community. My father, as a civil servant, made it clear that we were loath to make any excursions outside the lines he and the government had drawn. This decree was a kin to official papers that read: Do not spindle, fold, tear, deface, staple, mutilate, clip, bend, fold, color, crease, annotate, or copy, but destiny awaited. Although, not before completing 18 years of school two degrees and dropped from Medical School a few semesters early. I’d had enough formal education. I’d had enough suits and ties. I’d had enough.
An unalloyed joy was in the air; as if an Arcadian spirit of summer had taken us into a new era. Welcome to the 60’s. There seemed to be a vivid mobilization of spiritual energy along with intellectual charlatanry in a most affected manner, but who cared. I didn’t. Indulgences became a way of life. It transcended age, sex, race all manners of boundaries set in place by society. It was a new ideological exploration transported by a new faith and purpose. The infinite horizons beckon us toward better conduct, better lives and nobler visions. Of course, having spent most of my life in school and na?ve, separating the apparent from the real, wasn’t an option. The euphoria of this free wheeling 60’s swept me away. The idea that the moral temper of the times needed tempering never occurred to me, least wise, not until many years later.

I've recently started to jog along with my walking through the Jeff Galloway program (starts off with 15 seconds of jogging, 45 seconds of walking then goes from there). I also enjoy yoga and QiGong. Oh, and for the last few months I've been pretty much vegetarian/vegan...don't know if it's forever but I've noticed such a difference I don't see going back.
I have three adult children (all finally in Sonoma County) and a just-turned-five granddaughter. Our family is close and it is something I value deeply.
I love traveling even though it can, at times, be challenging. (That's when I get to practice 'going with the flow' and being at peace with the unexpected) I met up with my daughter in Thailand earlier this year for a few weeks and had a great time, even though there were some ups and downs! I'm planning on a trip to Guatelmala in February. I work part-time as a medical Social Worker (retired from my real job) and so far it suits me fairly well.
