He sat there in the splendor of his 87 years at the end of his son-in-laws short driveway. They weren't called director's chairs back then, Aluminum and a tough nylon fabric almost always with a plaid design, up against the sidewalk. In summer he wore a stylish straw hat and an old Fedora, somewhat the worse for ware, the rest of the year. The pink flesh hung off his clean-shaven face like the wattle on a turkey. He wore his hat so consistently that I can not now remember how much hair he did or didn't have. His bright blue eyes clouded by cataracts, I in my childish innocents asked, "Do they bother you Mr. Withers." Dad Withers, would take the ever present cigar out of his mouth, spit and say "As long as I can see to light the end of my cigar Billy." He would laugh a hearty laugh until it made him cough. I liked his answer so much I asked the question more than once. All summer brother Mike and his gang of sidewalk tricycle thugs would manage the confluence of old man and ice cream truck, it was a ritual. Dad Withers would walk up and down the sidewalk leaning heavily on his cane and I would follow in wrapped attention to the stories of his life; "I was one of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders.’ too drunk' I missed the boat to Cuba." How his friend Tony from Italy got himself bit by a rattlesnake while prospecting despite Dad Withers warnings the snake would rattle “You know Tony, like a bell“. All Tony could say was "He no ring a bell, he no ring a bell!". Dad Withers would laugh until he had to take the waded up Kleenex out of his pocket and wipe the tears. I would sit for hours on the lawn next to his chair while he told of seeing Halley's Comet and his long struggle with drink. "One New Years day I woke up and I looked at that whisky bottle and said 'You and me is going to become enemies.' and I haven't took a drink since." Once he expressed concern to his daughter that on a visit to his room I might have seen the wet spot on his bed, and thought the less of him. I loved the old man as close to a grandfather as I have had. At twilight I like to sit under the Oak tree on the side of the hill over looking the Simi Valley with a patio chair that swivels on a cushion of a tough Nylon plaid, every time I light my cigar I remember. -30-
