Date a man from Del Mar, United States. I was raised in a traditional East Coast environment and educated in the Midwest. My Dad was an old time country veterinarian and we had a farm where we raised horses and dogs. I later lived/worked in Manhattan (NYC), Idaho, Texas and now here on the beach in Del Mar. I have a super son (picture) who is loyal, thoughtful and successful. But best of all, he still periodically hugs me and says "I love you" or "Thanks for everything" (could hear it more often!). I have a large circle of valued long time friends and like to have get-togethers. They mostly describe me as thoughtful, honest, sensitive and an unconditional friend. I love to cook and entertain my friends, particularly beach barbecues. I believe in the philosophy that words are cheap and the best way to judge someone is to see if they walk the talk, particularly, on this venue.. If we ever meet, I think you will be quite glad we did whether the "sparks fly" or not.
My match and I will share the trait of "unconditionality" in our relationship in the areas of love, trust, fidelity, reliability and honesty. My Dad was a bridge contractor and I grew up working on old steel bridges in the Appalachian mountains of eastern Kentucky and West Virginia. My mother was a a beautiful and educated woman who taught me manners. I live in a log cabin on my bluegrass farm east of Lexington, Kentucky. I also have a small home in the Santa Rosa Mountains south of Palm Desert, California. But my value system is from the coal mining towns of Appalachia.

Meet a man from California, United States. I suppose I'm what you would call an intellectual, but I have no trouble not being stuffy. I'm social, outgoing, loving. I have good friends but feel I need a companion to share things with. I want someone I can talk with, someone interested in ideas and in the affairs of the community, nation and world. We don't have to agree all the time. For me honesty is very important, being straightforward but with tact and compassion. Being a good mate means being a good friend too.
My son and daughter-in-law with their kids, Nicholas (11) and Natalie (9), live two hours away in LA. I'm also close to my sister Susy who lives in Vermont in a house my (our) father built. I visited her twice last year.
I love to travel, or rather to be in foreign places, both familiar and new. (Getting there is rarely 'half the fun'.) Last Fall I spent 8 days in Chania, Crete, giving a paper (and reacting to many other papers) at a conference on Plato. I wanted to get to Santorini as well, but the logistics were too difficult. I had a wonderful time, but it would possibly have been even better if someone had shared the experience with me. Soon I have to go back and finally see Santorini. It would be nice to be with someone for that.
In the latter half of May I did something I never thought I would. I went on a cruise. It was with the Yale Educational Travel program, on an archeological theme. We went from Cyprus to Israel, Turkey (Mediterranean and Aegean coasts), and Greece, ending in Istanbul. I finally got to Troy, after passing up the chance some years ago. I've written a book on Homer's Odyssey, so I had to see it.I was not disappointed. The whole trip was great.
My interest in research and writing has not ebbed with retirement. I'm still involved with my work, trying to interest people in my ideas, and learning much from interaction with old and new colleagues (in a broad sense). My companion would probably be happiest if she had similar interests of her own. I don't mean sharing my interests, but understanding how and why I care about such things. I would hope I could learn much from her and her interests, continually.
But life with me would not be all ideas and thoughtful discussion. I both show and enjoy affection, tenderness. I laugh often and freely and get others to laugh too.
Since retiring from the University of Texas at Austin in 2011 I have become deeply involved with the San Dieguito River Valley. The SDRV Park includes a 55-mile Coast-to-Crest Trail from Volcan Mt near Julian to Del Mar. I am on the board of the Friends of the SDRV, an advocacy group. I'm also a volunteer in many capacities with the Park (Trail Patrol, 'dirt devil' trail maintenance, guiding school kids.I am also co Vice-Chair of a Coalition 'Protect San Dieguito River Valley', working with other activists (and we have a lawyer) to block an ill-advised development in the wetlands and floodplain next to the Polo Fields.
I go to concerts and lectures, particularly at the La Jolla Athenaeum, and take part monthly in the events of the San Diego Explorer's Club. I'm busy, but there's room for another close friend in my life.
