I bike 500 miles a month and ride in charitable activities like the MS15O bike tour in Orange Beach coming up this September. With biking my long-term goal is to get enough riders together to bike across country as a fund raising event for charity. While I was a marine biologist I spent a good bit of time writing grants to raise money and public speaking, so… I’m continuing to use those abilities just in new areas. In the seventies, when I lived in various parts of coastal California, I SCUBA dived twice a week. My education includes A.A., B.S., M.S., Ph.D., plus four years in the Navy as a cryptographer and a pilot's license. I read from many subject areas but history and historical fiction are my primary areas of interest at the moment. I once spoke good conversational Japanese but that was 30 years ago when I lived there and it has long since faded to a few choice words and phrases. I know bits and pieces of German, Spanish and Russian. For me communication, humor and a shared vision of the future are the characteristics of what in my mind is the basis for finding you. I find kindness and intelligence very attractive qualities - I listen more than I talk – do rather than watch – think before I speak or do. I spend a good bit of my time exercising, writing, reading, watching movies, and trying my hand at learning/making furniture among other things. I work a few hours a week doing small to medium home repair – something new for me. If Alabama’s budget has enough money I should be teaching at a junior college part-time this fall. With change comes opportunity and I believe in change --however I do not believe in change for the sake of change. Any meaningful change in life requires courage, commitment and a passion for something better. Stability has to be balanced in the change equation too. Stability for me means recognizing, appreciating and nurturing the good things and moving on from the bad things.
Now for a different aspect of me --what I like to do? While work is a priority, I like to take advantage of my free time doing fun things and being active. Being on the water is one of those things. My family has had boats since I was a child and when I was 16, I my Dad trusted me well enough to let me take his boat to the lake with all of my friends regularly. The first thing I did when I finished college and got out in the real world was get a boat of my own. I have been in and around boats my whole life and now is no exception. I also like to ride Harley Davidson Motorcycles. When I was 14, I told my Dad I wanted a motorcycle. He listed some heavy duty chores for me to do around the house and said if I did them, he would buy me a motor. I told him I was going to go tell all of my friends I was getting a motorcycle and he taught me a valuable lesson in life. That is, don't tell people what you are going to do, show them. There are so many times you hear people say what they are going to do but it never happens and the term BS comes to mind. I still live by this and long story short, I did the chores, got the bike and rode it to my friends house and showed them. For a 14 year old, that was true freedom to have your own transportation and be able to go places. I've been riding ever since and still sense the freedom of being on the bike and not caged up like being in a car. It is kind of like --only bikers really understand why dogs stick their heads out of car windows. While boating and biking are outside activities I enjoy, other activities include music entertainment, being with friends and dining out. There are many favorite places I like especially with the right person or people.
