Date a girl from Arizona, United States. In my former life as a sportswriter, I got to meet plenty of people but very few in the context where it would be professional to get to know them on a more personal level.
Now as a reformed newspaper employee who's moved on to the world of information technology and blogging, I'm looking to broaden my social and romantic horizons, but I'm more than a bit rusty at making that first (or second, or third) move.
I tend towards being an introvert, or at least having a small and close-knit circle of friends rather than a large social network. And I can come off as a bit quirky, but I've learned to embrace that and I hope you can to.
I have a wide range of interests from the relatively mainstream to the incredibly geeky, ranging from a passion for sports, especially ice hockey, to love for musical theatre, comic books, medicine and volunteering. I don't expect to find a guy with all of those in common, obviously. I kind of expect it's a one-of-a-kind combination. But a willingness to let me indulge in those, even with a little teasing, is paramount. If you're willing to do that, I'll even put up with your best Texas jokes.
So what do I want in a guy? Well he has to love sports, or at least put up with me being immersed in them much of the time. A sense of humor is a definite plus, as is the ability to debate most anything just for the intellectual fun. And perhaps someone who has strengths where I don't - the ability to start conversations and easily make friends with strangers, for instance, and an overall ease in crowds.
I've got asthma, so smoking is a deal breaker. And you have to be willing to put up with my low-maintenance cat.
I think it would be nice to go out somewhere relatively quiet on a first date and just talk to get to know each other a little bit. Then we can hit a game later on, once we've decided who the rooting interesting should be.
