As for me, the first thing you should know is that I am absolutely honest, so honest that I would tell you right now if I weren't. I was born and grew up in rural East Texas, surrounded by a thick forest of oil derricks. My father was an oil field roustabout, all his life, and my large family was perennially poor. I was the first in the entire family tree, so far as we know, to attend college: Rice University (BA, Math) magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa; and Yale University MA (Soc), MA( Econ),Ph.D (Pol Sci) conferred "With Distinction". I've taught at Clark College, Lake Forest College, La Trobe University (Australia) and UC Irvine. I retired early to see to my own work, which was some distance outside the academic box. The point of this horn tootin' is to stress that where someone is "coming from" has much to do with where he came from, and what path he took from there to here. Especially if the cultural-intellectual distance is great. And believe me, it was huge. It is no exaggeration to say that I am a kind of home-grown or internal immigrant.
I am the co-author of an extraordinary young lady--easily my finest achievement--who is scary smart and who beggars my stock of superlatives. She has just received her Ph. D. (UCLA), teaches now at CS Northridge, and lives near Los Felix. The photos here amount to a small scrapbook. The Samoyeds in the photos are Moby I. and Moby II. , who are no longer with us. They would be saints if they had been Catholic and had less fur. Finally, I should tell you that I am a duly certified international Godfather, though occasionally I make offers that can be refused.
