Meanwhile, I work a lot. I am very blessed to have two callings and the will to answer both. I teach math and make furniture; teaching for eight years, furniture for 14. I like to do both a little differently. There wouldn’t be a problem if I didn’t expect great things in both: the classroom needs Superman, and my aspirations with making furniture demands all my might. One of the two callings might beat out the other, and I wish it to be... What do you think? (This is where I think Sam Maloof was really lucky...to be married to Alfreda.) Work is work, and I love to break away from it…
Fitness is important to me, but so is the thrill of it. So I like to run far. You know the feeling? Sometimes I dance in the middle of mile seven…because I can’t help it…so I keep going. Wilderness trails are my favorite - getting out further over multiple days with just the right amount of supply and plenty of uncertainty. The moment I sit still, though, might be my favorite. That’s what I train for. At the least, I come back with a cool story. I’m used to going alone, but the company of a good match would be fabulous.
I am also quite civilized. The beard shaves off easily and all the stain on my hands washes out. I like to explore the arts and culture and cuisine of our city, everything from the bohemian to the bourgeois, new and ancient. I love meeting up with friends, but having a real partner-in-crime would make it all more alive.
Home is a great feeling for me, my home studio workshop. (The detached garage is the workshop, so no worries about sawdust everywhere.) True to my astrological nature, I love my shell of a home, am happily contained…as long as I can make my own furniture. It’s Pomona, I know, but it’s historic and on the edge, and only 30 minutes to downtown LA or OC. If we click, I think you should check it out – peaceful and quiet neighborhood, delightful for walking around, hip things close by, especially for running and cycling. But I'm open to making a new home if a match lights up a new way.
I’m from Los Angeles, San Gabriel side, but my parents came from two other parts of the world as are my first and last names, and everyone says I look like I’m from who knows. So I’ve always felt different - foreign everywhere with the confidence and explorative nature to go anywhere. My family story is a humble and triumphant one of faraway chances...including all the struggles, the tragedy, and tons of love and affection. The little house where I grew up was on a hill with a big view. God was very apparent. It was the perfect nest for a quiet, curious boy like me. Similarly, I dream of building a home for a wonderful family life.
I believe in world citizenship, international morality. I believe the psyche is the gate to spirituality and better not get neglected. I believe in individuation and glad I can't do it by myself. I believe in the power of forgiveness. I feel the funk y tengo ritmo, mamasita. I believe you should do what you love, and I should ride a horse someday. I believe I'll be a better man with a true match, when love rules, and that she, too, would love to tango together.
