I was born and raised in Denver as a middle child, the third in a working class family of six children. My childhood experiences were multicultural and diverse. I soon developed a taste for "the good life" and prosperity. Noting the house full of kids and not a lot of money, from early on, I perceived that my family did not have the resources for me to explore all the things they had exposed me to. The future I wanted was to be my responsibility. This realization gave me a strong work ethic, taught me self-reliance, and spared me a sense of entitlement.
In grade school, I took great pleasure in helping care for two younger siblings. Later, when I began to think seriously about a career, I decided on pediatrics, and with the inspiration of my own childhood doctor, set my sites on medical school. After graduation, internship and residency, I settled in the East Bay and have been practicing pediatrics here ever since.
I live in Oakland in an 1879 Victorian house which, over the years, has been restored and furnished with antiques. It is an Oakland landmark and has been a venue for many special events including a series of jazz concerts. The landscaping and gardening, along with weight-training give me a great workout. Since my two sons are raised and long-gone, this large home is the ultimate "empty nest" but after so many years of restoration and collecting, it has become a way of life for me.
By junior high, I announced to my incredulous parents that I would start studying foreign languages in preparation for leaving the U.S. I studied Spanish in high school, then French in college. I am self-taught in Portuguese from many years of travel to Brazil. I get to speak Spanish and Portuguese everyday with many of the families in my office. Travels to France and the French Caribbean help keep my French tuned up; I visit Paris often.
I am a great lover of all genres of music including blues, R & B, gospel, ethnic and classical, especially opera and baroque music. I grew up singing in the Pentecostal church choir; this led me to love piano; I regret not learning to play well. Singing, as a child, led to a general interest in vocal and choral music, including opera. I have danced and played percussion in a Brazilian music and dance ensemble and would love to return to practicing and performing again someday. I have been a season ticket holder at the SF Opera and SF Symphony, as well as the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra for many years. I love jazz music and attend as many live performances as possible. I have been a volunteer with the Healdsburg Jazz Festival for twelve years. Let's share some music!
My father was a chef cook and my mother was from a family of caterers in a resort town in Colorado. In our home, there was always a flurry of gardening, harvesting, preserving, cooking and baking, family traditions I still continue. I enjoy cooking, especially with friends, as well as dining out.
