I moved to Alabama recently, following stops in Virginia, Texas, and Ohio, and an early life in West Virginia. It seems I’ve lived a nomad’s life, but I would not describe myself as having a wandering spirit. I want this to be my last stop. I would like deep roots again.

I’ve stayed grounded because of my family and friends. Despite me not living near my family for close to twenty years, I remain very close to my mother, who gets a call from me every Sunday, my sister, who has me on speed dial just to chat (sometimes too much), and my niece, who trusts me to help her make decisions. I have also been fortunate to have made good friends at all my stops and at different times in my life, but I’m even more fortunate to have stayed close with many of them, despite no longer living in the same area code. Because of my family and old and new friends, I am no stanger to stability and continuity despite my many moves. I should add that my two 16 year old cats, who have been with me through four jobs, four states, and one marriage, might claim to be part of the equation if they were asked.
Many people would define me by my career, about which I am passionate, and for which I have moved across the country more than once, but that would sell me a little short. I learned a long time ago that I need balance in my life, so I try to maintain a life outside of work. I seem to live myself balancing extremes. For example, I am a social person, and I’ve always shared my life and time with friends, but I am also happy with my own company. I like getting out and doing nearly anything: biking, a music show, camping, a gallery, a good dinner with good conversation, or a drink with friends. Having said that, I also value my time at home hiding from the world, listening to music and reading, cooking the occasional elaborate dinner for myself, or scouring Hulu for things I’ve meant to watch. I like trying new things and exploring new places, but I also value and need routines and familiar places.
My friends tell me that some of my best qualities are simple ones. I listen, I pay attention, and I don't judge. I like getting to know people, and I am interested in their stories, especially when they make me laugh. I like and respect people who have opinions and ideas, even when I disagree with them. I am hopeful and think my best days are ahead of me. I take care of myself, and I feel good about feeling a little younger than I actually am. I usually know when I am taking myself far too seriously, so I usually know when to make fun of myself--which I do far more often than anyone else would do. These are qualities I like about myself and embrace. I can say that I know who I am and I'm comfortable with who I am, but I also recognize that I am a work in progress.
I am looking for someone who thinks and makes me think. A mind, especially an open one, can be so attractive. I like being around people who can make me laugh and tell me interesting things. I like spending time with people who are independent and take care of themselves and respect themselves. I think women who can show me new things and make them fun are amazing. I am divorced because after 18 years of marriage, my ex-wife and I realized that we better friends than we are spouses. In other words, oil and water is better off in its own containers instead of trying to coexist in the same barrel. We made it work as long as we did because we both are giving, love our kids and desired to do what is right…unfortunately neither one of us had much in common and life is too short to try to be something you not just so the other person can be happy. Be yourself and be happy with someone who can be the same.
With that in mind, I cannot not say enough about compatibility. Our looks are what usually causes the first chemical reaction to attraction, but common interest is the glue that makes a relationship magical, and as for me, that is exactly what I am looking for!
