Hi, I'm not really an active member of match but work keeps me busy and I am new to the area so I'd hope this could give me a chance to meet some interesting people outside of my profession. I'll admit, clubs and bars can be great places to dance, drink and have fun with friends while you people watch, but I highly doubt there are genuine people out there to meet and have an intelligent conversation with (I've tried and the music is too loud! My answer: because this is where I was offered a job. My job, specifically, is as an English professor at one of the local universities. (And yes, writing this profile does sorta feel like another job application!)
I am not really the smarty-pants type, despite the fact that I just got my PhD. I really like getting to know people and discovering things we have in common - if those things are books, great - but I am just as much, if not more, into music, art, film, and enjoying the finer things in life.
People I meet here tend to assume that I have preconceptions about the south, as someone from the north. But when I lived in California during grad school (9 years) I pretty much went through the whole getting-rid-of-preconceptions thing, and right now I'm just trying to enjoy Mobile for what it is. And I'm finding myself really wanting to enjoy life alongside someone special. (I can't just teach and grade papers all day!)
What sort of things do I enjoy? First and foremost, good company and good friends (which is where you come in). Good food (though I have eaten more not-good food since moving here than I'd like to admit). Listening to records and going to shows. Enjoying living in my own house. Cats and dogs. I have two cats, but right now they're living with my folks in CT - long story. I miss them. If you have pets, there is a good chance they will love me. If you are allergic, that's fine because there are no pets around me these days :( At least there's less house-cleaning to do.
