Professionally, I am a semi-retired academic; for me, retirement has been like a permanent sabbatical: teaching only when something -- or somewhere -- interesting presents itself, continuing research, writing, presenting, and reviewing, but no academic politics (Henry Kissinger said “the reason academic politics are so bitter is because so little is at stake”), and no university committees. Since "retirement" I've done visiting gigs in Hong Kong, The Netherlands,, UK, Japan, and Taiwan.
Good music is a big avocational part of my life both as an attendee and as a performer; I studied piano and then classical voice, and enjoy live music, classical to jazz (live rock makes me worry about hearing loss). Favorite composers, besides the obvious members of the canon, are Prokofiev, Rorem, Schubert (esp. chamber music), Chausson, and Mahler.
My preferred exercise is brisk aerobic walking; I distrust sports for which you need special clothes. Though I usually walk alone, beach or lake walks are a nice way to get to know someone -- if he can keep up with my pace. I've also taken up yoga again after a gap of about 20 years. I'll miss the beach when I leave San Diego, but not the weather; where are the thunderstorms and deciduous trees? And where is the life of the mind?
There's a difference between being alone and being lonely. i have learned to enjoy my own company, and indeed, would rather spend an evening alone than with someone whose company isn't stimulating. My personal and financial autonomy are very important to me, and I would respect my partner's need to be alone. I'm not looking for love (in right or wrong places), but would like to meet intellectually sharp, physically and emotionally healthy grownup men with an intellectual bent and a love of music, literature, and fine arts who like to converse, cook (or at least eat and maybe clean up if I cook)), go to movies, plays, concerts, dinner, and eventually travel.
