I love to laugh, the smell of spring rain, finding a good read, and pursuing new hobbies. I have a lot of energy and am a very upbeat, happy person. I was in a sorority in college and truly cherish my female friendships but also can be one of the guys when it comes to football season and craft beer.
I received my degree in Environmental Policy (econ, history, public policy, and science all in one!) and loved every class I had. Really, I just love to learn. I worked in environmental education for two years and worked with kids in the woods. The hikes, the a-ha moments when they saw photosynthesis in action, and the ability to just get kids in the woods was an amazing experience. In the end I wanted to work more in my degree field and found myself out here in San Diego working as an Environmental Planner.
With that said, I love my work! I have a fairly large project right now and love the intricacies involved with it. My quiet/sane time is on a yoga mat, at pure barre, or immersed in a good book. My friends and family keep me grounded. I have a good base of friends here in San Diego, but my true anchors are mostly back home in the Midwest and on the East Coast. Really, I do not know what I would do without them and I take every possible opportunity to see them. This means the occasional trip to Boston and NYC to see my two best friends and flying to Central IL to see family.
I love sports. Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, UIUC Fighting Illini when they are decent. Really, I just enjoy giving my Mom crap because she is a STL Cards fan. :) I am the captain of my kickball team with WAKA, which is similar to VAVI but a national league.
I find food politics fascinating... Yes, I did say food politics. With that said, I am a huge fan of Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma. He is one of my favorite writers. Mark Bittman's articles in the New York Times are a close second.
I guess this is the most important: I am looking for someone who is easy going, intelligent, sensitive, kind.. I have always been attracted to intelligent men who know what they want in life. I love a good debate and I am very open-minded. I guess dating is about learning about yourself and what you want in life and your hopeful partner, right? :)

Meet someone special from United States. I just moved to San Diego from Boston and I'm using the opportunity to reassess my priorities. I have always been very driven and I don't think that has changed, but I am now trying to orient myself toward goals that are mine, rather than what I think other people will admire. My first 33 years of life were at least partly driven by what other people thought of me; trying to be "successful" in other people's eyes.
I struggled through a Ph.D. program in science at Harvard as a single mom and while I am so glad that I didn't quit and that I proved to myself and others that I could do it, I am coming to realize that it is less important to impress others than it is to nourish and pursue your own interests. I love science, but I've learned that I like science as a noun, rather than a verb. That means I don't want to DO science anymore. I want to think about, write about, talk about science, but not actually create new knowledge. I'm so glad I went to grad school, but I don't want to go back to the lab.
So after grad school I worked at a law firm doing patent law (i.e. thinking about, writing about, and talking about science), and really loved that job. Oftentimes law firms will hire Ph.D.s from prestigious schools and send them to law school to become patent attorneys, and this was the track I was on. It was really intriguing work, but the hours were punishing and I found I never had time for my son or for myself and it would only get worse when I started going to law school at night. One day my son asked me when I was going to "graduate from my job" and that was really the turning point for me. So I decided to quit and I moved to San Diego.
I recently started a small tutoring business here in San Diego and I tutor mostly high school students in math and science. I also do some SAT preparation tutoring, which is fun. I don't think tutoring will be my life-long career, but for now it is affording me the flexibility to be really present in my son's life and to pursue my other interests. As for the future, I'm most interested in pursuing a position teaching biology at a good private school here in San Diego. It'd be great to get the tuition assistance and send my son to the same school that I work at. Overall I'm trying to simplify and pursue interests that might not sound so amazing at a cocktail party, but that make sense for my son and me.
So what am I doing with my new-found free time now that I'm not working for the man? I cook and bake, and I exercise and spend lots of time outside. I practice yoga (heated) and usually make it to about 4 classes per week. I do miss some parts of the east coast life-style (i.e. walking, you may have heard of it, it's where you use your legs for travel rather than a car), but overall I am very happy to be back on the west coast. San Diego is new to me (although I actually grew up in California), so I'm busy exploring this beautiful city and all that it has to offer. I'd love to meet someone who can show me around -- I'm looking for some good hiking trails and am thinking I might want to try paddle boarding sometime.

I am one of those pesky non-San Diego born and raised transplants, and while I have been here for quite some time, I will always be a Wisconsinite at heart! Moved here to go to college and decided that the winters here are A LOT nicer. While it doesn't define who I am, my job in local government demonstrates the kind of impact I want to make in the world. I'm a pretty go with the flow kind of person with a sarcastic comment and a laugh to go along with the crazy things that happen on any given day. I like to do anything from going to the beach to ride bikes, checking out a art exhibit, trying to perfect my bowling form, jumping in the car for a random road trip, to hanging out with friends for game night.
I love watching those "I Love the 80's, 90's or 00's" shows on VH-1, there is just something about hearing a song that can take you instantly back to a time in your life that you haven't thought about in years; or how funny is it to see a product or commercial for something you completely forgot about...Ecto Cooler Hi-C or Max Headroom?! Rather than list a bunch of things that you may or may not possess, I'll just say this online dating deal is hard, and trying to describle the "perfect" match is virtually impossible. All I really want is to find someone that I click with, that is fun to hang out with and is looking to eventually have a real relationship.

I love to play outdoors in the dirt and snow. I'm a glutton for abuse: I find 100 mile bike (pedaling) rides "fun." Four wheels move the body: two wheels move the soul. I tend to sink when I swim: a consequence of 29 years of weight training. I'll travel on a whim: I don't need stars to classify the quality of a hotel, as I often prefer the one's outside of my tent. I've had the great fortunate of soaking in a brillant sunrise while summiting Mt Rainier with friends; but, I still appreciate the subtle magic of a weekend SoCal hike. NPR is frequently on my airwaves. I love to get lost in a good book. I strongly believe in overcoming inertia. I rarely watch TV and when I do its usually football, hockey (my beloved Red Wings), the TDF, or an occasional movie. I love a good burger and craft beer: however, I don't drink much. Friends, family, and experiences are my most precious gifts. Everyday I'm grateful for a multitude of reasons. I try to not take the simple and mundane things in life for granted; like being able to get out of bed on my own volition. Working on a spinal cord injury unit for many years helped shape this perspective. I am forever grateful to the many people who have touched my life in immeasurable ways.
