I’ve read I ought to tell you how my friends would describe me. They did not respond well to my attempts at surveillance. So, suspending reality for a moment, here I go:
They would describe me as outgoing and adventurous – a bit mischievous, the initiator of plans. Exhibit A: I talked one of my friends into parachuting, a fact his wife won’t let me forget. They’d also mention I’m someone they trust, a friend who has their back and who listens.
They’d point out that I enjoy engaging in discussions and friendly debate. For example, the saying goes “Never talk about politics or religion.” But in many environments I enjoy doing so, and usually everyone ends up happy after an intriguing discussion. Now, I’d avoid a Red Sox/Yankees discussion when back east, a Serbia vs. Croatia discussion in Dalmatia, debate about Catholicism in the Vatican – I’d probably meet a similar end in each case. But with good common sense, and an ear willing to listen, I not only learn a great amount about people, but also myself.
I’ve lived in several places beyond the Bay Area: New York, Philadelphia, Columbus, Ohio (I am still thawing out), Sacramento, and Los Angeles. And at the risk of clich?, I think spending some time living in various places broadens one’s perspective on just about everything. That said, each time I’ve moved, I’ve always been drawn back to the Bay Area for both its innate beauty as well as its culture; it’s now truly home.
I am passionate about traveling, and when doing so, I engross myself in the culture. My vacations often involve trips abroad, sampling new things. While I do enjoy some relaxation during a vacation, I am not the guy sunning himself by the pool for several hours. I can relax there for a couple hours before I get antsy to explore.
Since I have a variety of interests, a great date could be any number of things, excluding Karaoke (that would require a black belt negotiator). It could be as simple as taking a trip to Point Bonita, snapping some scenic as well as goofy photos, dining at an excellent Italian place in the Marina, and finishing with an Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista (who cares if it is a tourist location – that stuff is fantastic).
On the other hand a great date could also be riding bikes across the Golden Gate Bridge, coming back via ferry, then heading to a park for a picnic. While I enjoy all kinds of movies, I’d prefer to chat and get to know someone during the first few dates.
Something I value highly is honesty over political correctness. I like to communicate in a collaborative, respectful way. I always learn new things when people have their defenses down and are engaged in an open conversation, revealing their true beliefs.
