In my travels, I have signed autographs for crowds of art lovers in Tokyo, climbed on the roof of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris to get just the right photograph, swum in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Atlantic, and Pacific, buzzed the treetops of the Costa Rican jungle in a small plane with a drunken pilot, played blackjack in Monte Carlo, among countless other adventures. A trip to Burning Man reminds me of my childhood and an evening at the opera reminds me of how far I've come.
About this peculiar process, it is not Amazon or eBay. and we are not products. This is simply a forum for communication between flesh and blood human beings. We can navigate this experience with a sense of humor and compassion for each other, even when there's no connection.
Declaring a required laundry list of virtues and interests is predictable and ultimately meaningless. A person's character is revealed not in a sales pitch but in their actions. This takes time to really see. I often say that finding the right person begins with BEING the right person. How often we seem to forget that. Who wouldn't want intelligence, beauty, health, success, humor, kindness, and a dozen other desirable attributes? Rational thought has great value in just about every area but that unpredictable matter of mutual chemistry. We just know it when it happens. All that follows is the adventure of discovery. It is like a rare astronomical event, but it only takes one. If it were too easy then we wouldn't appreciate it, which I suspect is the reason for so many failed relationships. My life is an enjoyable adventure. Living abroad and travel have provided me with a better insight into people and places as well as the opportunity to cultivate friendships. I have settled back in Marin and take great pleasure in the pastoral and urban landscapes by hiking, riding my bike, and finding new destinations for daytrips. While the hours at work can sometimes take a steep curve up, my job has a lot of flexibility so that the truly important things in life are never missed like volunteering in my son's classroom, meeting a friend for a leisurely-paced lunch, or finding inspiration at museums and parks.
My ongoing project is updating an old house. I found a collaborative contractor who keeps me focused on discrete milestones in this very long-term endeavor. My goal this summer is adding a retaining wall to support a small deck and accessible walkway with some landscaping. If you have ideas on deer-resistent plants, please drop a note my way!
