Meet someone special from California, United States. I grew up in a small town in Kentucky. Though I am long separated from there (in more ways than geography), I have been shaped by the simplicity, friendliness, and support of small town life and by the warmth of my home and two loving parents. I left there for college, got a PhD in philosophy, and then settled in Berkeley where I’ve been blessed to find my calling as a prep school humanities teacher. I also write and do photography. I am on sabbatical this semester (spring, 2012), so I have a very flexible schedule.
I am soulful, giving, sensitive, caring, patient, and loyal. I am also great father material, though at my age I know that might not happen.
My friends (and students) tell me I’m funny, but that tends to emerge after I get to know someone better. I generally prefer deeper interactions with one other person or an intimate gathering of a few to rather than large parties.
I love being in nature, and I hike, run, play tennis, and I'm venturing back into golf. I watch tv infrequently (usually the news). I love good films and art, watching dance performances. I’m a dog person and have a wonderful German Shepherd. I am something of a “foodie,” so I love great restaurants, from neighborhood gems to the Michelin-starred. I’m a good cook. (I also do dishes!) I like to travel, but by nature I’m more a homebody than a nomad. Some of life’s richest moments are those around the house.
I would like to meet someone who is basically happy, who knows who she is, who is capable of intimacy, love and commitment and who would like to build a home in the richest sense of that word.

There are two well integrated sides to me: one active and passionate, the other, active and intellectual. When I tested down the middle on the MyersBriggs test, the psychologist said she'd never seen someone so evenly balanced... I had to laugh as I already knew that...I do know myself.

What has been consistently dear to me is my relationship with my son, grown now but as dear as he was that day he held my finger on the rocks at Bodega Bay, my art -- painting and photography -- and keeping myself flexible in both body and mind, growing, learning, loving.
This is a particularly good time of my life...most of the issues with which I was concerned for many years, business, raising a child, providing security, and those of the ego, success, money, and the like, have resolved themselves well and I find myself, fortunately, able to do much of what I’ve looked forward to, painting, photography, being with friends and family, participating in sports, traveling, all in a relaxed, centered manner...there is a sense in all of this that as I grow older, and I hope wiser, has a richness I may have passed by a bit too quickly before...and with this richness an opening into an inner space that seeks a deep sharing with a real partner.
Beyond that, I thought I’d try to express what else is meaningful in a different way, to offer a sense of how I see the world.
I came across these words in The Second Book of the Tao by Stephen Mitchell. The author poeticizes the wisdom of Chuang Tzu, an ancient Chinese master. Without permission, I have edited his words as such wisdom belongs to all of us. These are not words of a religion, nor do they prescribe a practice or ritual. They are simply one man’s thoughts about our existence. I rewrite them here simply as an offering to anyone who may find meaning in them, as have I.
Everything can be seen as a this;
Everything can be seen as a that.
The 'that' depends upon the 'this';
The 'this' mirrors the 'that'.
One follows from the other;
Each is inseparable from both,
The same side of the same coin.
Every point of view depends upon the viewer,

Meet men and women from California, United States. I'm pretty easy going, vaguely intellectual, and I rarely get worked up over things. I travel a lot for work and pleasure, often combining the two. I have a daughter in college, whom I'm very proud of. She's truly my legacy and my gift to the world.
I enjoy my work a great deal.
I've always been an extremely happy person, and I seem to be missing whatever gene it is that makes people worry. My values are very traditional (integrity, hard work, loyalty to friends and family, tolerance.)
I went to boys schools (and one year at a men's college) and was taught old-school manners, some of which I actually remember.
I believe in over-tipping waiters and waitresses.
I'd rather read a good book than watch TV (I enjoy documentaries and the news but never seem to get around to it - TV and me don't get along too well). I'd like to meet someone who can talk about history as well as celebrity gossip.
And I'm not certain about walking on the beach and looking at the sunset. I find it much more interesting to walk for hours through the streets of Manhatten or San Francisco looking up at all the wonderful buidlings. I'm fascinated by people and what makes them tick, but I'm not terribly introspective.

I’m a published poet, too. Actually only one poem, published in the San Francisco Chronicle editorial page a week after America’s invasion of Iraq. Seems so long ago...a tragic course for our country. Whatever happened to the vision of John F. Kennedy when he spoke about the struggle against the common enemy of man. That was the inspiration of this poem:
The Old Warrior’s Plea
Such a turn of the phrase, the old Warrior spoke,
“Now the trumpets summon us again,” said he.
Not the slings, not the arrows, to shoot from the darkness, but a Call to awaken us Free,
Free from the lock of the bushman’s law,

I'm really not much of a poet. I am a very good architect and designer with my own firm in Berkeley. I've lived in the Bay Area all my life. Went to UC Berkeley. I play tennis, practice tai chi chuan, or Argentine tango daily. I'm teaching my tango friends tai chi steps, and my tai chi friends tango! It's all good. My travels usually involve architecture and tango...kind of tangotecture, although this year I'm spending more time closer to home, working on my design projects, paying attention to my business, composing tangos, and only dreaming about where to go next...
I personally don't think I fit a mold, so maybe I seem too inaccessible or maybe just strange. Also in the last year, I've been spending more time paying attention to staying alive within the downturn of the architecture economy, and thus have not spent as much time on the net looking for you.
Nevertheless, here I am. I know you're out there. Bright, beautiful, intelligent, independent...am I asking for too much?
Well, maybe we don't need to bake the bread, but we may enjoy breaking some bread together.
