I've worked - often quite successfully - in the academic world, on Wall Street, as an antiquarian bookseller, and as an entrepreneur; I have always also worked as a freelance writer and lecturer, and have for some years now been researching a rather obscure topic of art history. I have traveled widely and often, and speak a smattering of several languages. People think of me as intellectual, highly educated, cultured, serious and sometimes even humorous. I think of myself as perhaps all those things too but also as enthusiastic, warm-hearted, occasionally too opinionated and pompous, but always willing to acknowledge my faults and to apologize for tactlessness. My children think of me as stodgy and old-fashioned; however, loving them as I do I have had to accept that even some of the most wonderful people in the world have terrible taste in music, have limited vocabularies, unexamined values, and no books in their home.
