I've played blackjack in Vegas and come away with a little bit of money, played football in high school, and college I just played, but managed to graduate. I rode a horse bareback, I rode motocross in my teens and 20s. I rode a Harley-Davidson until I laid it down and I decided not to get back on that one. I sailed a 22 footer in Lake Powell Utah and a 32 footer in Choctawhatchee Bay. I've snorkeled in Trunk Bay, Megan's Bay down in the Virgin Islands and rolled the dice a couple casinos in the Bahamas. I've walked on South Beach, Pacific Beach, Sapphire Beach and Orange Beach.(And a nude beach in Copenhagen Denmark just for grins) I've skied Aspen, Tahoe, and Arapahoe Basin. I've slalom skied in Lake Fairview Orlando, and barefooted in my hometown lake Tuscaloosa. I've caught Black fin tuna off the coast of Venice Louisiana, redfish off the Chandelier islands, and Wahoo off the coast of Destin Florida, and big mouth bass at my favorite local pond. I've done Whitewater in new River Gorge, the Ocoee, the Nantahala River, and eased down the little Cahaba River. I stood on top of the Twin Towers before 9/11, ate a good steak at the Friars club, and saw my first Monet at the Met Museum of Art, and walked through central park at night.
I was in Baton Rouge when Alabama pulled out a win in 08. I saw Alabama win the SEC championship against Florida and 99 in Atlanta. I am the true Bama fan who has sat in every part of Denny Stadium at one time or another. I'm not very political but I did go see W get sworn in 2000. And later in the spring a couple of years later spent the afternoon at Sequoia outdoors on the Potomac. I watched my nephew hit a home run, I danced with my niece and didn't embarrass her. I watched the fall colors come in at Little River Canyon up in northeast Alabama, and felt a brisk fall morning in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. I buried my very best friend in all the world in Southern Pines North Carolina. I sat through more than a few weddings and made sure I enjoyed myself at a reception. I am still amazed that it takes eight minutes for the light from the sun to reach my sunroof and that the light for most every star has taken millions of years to land on my retina.
There is so much beauty in abundance around me that I know that I can never truly appreciate it because I'm only human and get too caught up in the world around me to appreciate the world around me. Like I said…It's pretty good life, and one that's worth living. If I can start with the understanding that life can be difficult and will hand me my fair share of disappointments and I can really appreciate all the moments like those above. My dad taught me to be a gentleman and the value of hard work and the wisdom of doing something you love so that you want to get up in the morning. I think he had a little bit of Nick Saban in him because he taught me the power of process over the reward of result. That if I will bury myself in the process, I will gain a sense of purpose that will lead to resolve and focus that generally leads to a good outcome but an outcome I can live with regardless. That we can always do more together than I can do alone. My mom taught me to care and to treat everyone I come in contact with as I would like to be treated. And that everybody has a story to tell and if I take a minute to listen I will gain a little. Despite the bucket list items that I can scratch off, I know that it's not all about me. I certainly used to be more selfish and self-centered but I had to go through that "phase" in order to learn to appreciate the benefits of giving sometimes just a little in order to get back so much more.
