Most of what you’re about to read is likely going to sound like a string of nakedly honest admissions designed to put people off. I suppose there’s some truth to that, for I am not for everyone. I am an intensely unique person with a wonderful set of flaws that I’ve committed my life to understanding. Helen Keller said that, 'A happy life consists not in the absence, but in the mastery of hardships’, and that sums up a significant portion of who I am and what my life is about.
I work as a backcountry guide in Yosemite National Park, guiding and teaching people not only the ins and outs of backpacking, but how to enjoy themselves in the backcountry, which is often the more important job.
Several years ago I committed my life to turning my back on the sedentary and disconnected life that I, and many of us, have lived... for no other reason than it seems to be the status quo. For nearly two decades I lived alone, and was fiercely independent... to the point of being almost entirely devoid of any meaningful contact with people. That’s my demon - my tendency to be a loner. There, I said it. Its part of who I am, and has certainly helped me at times... and its an important key to understanding me.
Being so independent taught me some very valuable things, lessons I’d never willingly give up. However, the price I paid was my tendency to isolate myself from people. In committing to this change in my life I decided to search for a job where I could use my independence constructively, while also reaching out to small groups of people and building meaningful relationships. Guiding turns out to be exactly what I needed, and I’ve committed my life to pursuing it. Not only because I love it, but because its precisely what is good for me. No other single pursuit has been as cathartic or as beautiful, while also allowing me to give back to others.
Sure, maybe we’ll meet, have a drink, and just be friends. I’ve met some very close friends through Match... friends that I’ll have for the rest of my life. Maybe I won’t go on a single date in the next month or two. Maybe this last try at Match will simply lead to a few great friendships. I’m following my heart by signing up again. I wasn’t wrong in the past, even though I didn’t meet the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with, and maybe this time it’ll be the same. Regardless, I’m here to find you... and I certainly hope that I do. My life isn’t quite the same without you, wherever you might be.
I'm very affectionate and love to be romantic. I'll send you text messages from the other room just so I can hear you giggle. Spending a night home cooking together while listening to some music or a movie in the background is bliss for me. And while I'm likely portraying myself as being relatively intense (which is true, to a degree), I am equally silly and spend most of my time laughing or smiling. I don't spend a lot of time watching TV, but when I do I'm usually watching PBS, documentaries, or something ridiculous like Arrested Development or Archer. I'm also a voracious reader, spend quite a bit of time trying to hone my photography skills... and I also climb, after finally getting back into it after a long hiatus.
Can you happily spend an afternoon outdoors? Are there songs that will move you to tears? Are there moments when you’re frustrated with life and the world because it sometimes seems like most people just don’t seem to get it? Have you ever wanted to spend days hiking into an area where you don't see anyone for days... and then spend hours skinny dipping and laying in the sun at a pristine lake at 11,000 feet... surrounded by granite peaks? Are there countless other things that you can truly enjoy alone, but would mean so much more with just the right person by your side? Here I am.

It was such a crazy time most people never left the conference room and got high on Shasta Cola and corn chips! I never made it to a casino, restaurant or any show! I could go on about this passion but will save all the savory details for when we meet!

All that stuff needs to be taken in context of what is most important to me, Jesus. I'm not "religious." I follow Jesus and it's cool. It's the core of who I am. I really like readin' the Bible, I talk with God in prayer, I LOVE serving people, and I go to church 'cause it's awesome. God is real. I love Him and He really loves me. The woman that's interested in hangin' out with me needs to love Jesus, too. If we don't have the most important thing in common, the rest eventually won't line up. Know what I'm sayin'?
I'm casual but intelligent. Creative describes me very well. I'm patient, composed and an excellent team player. I'm undeniably social. I am independent but it's well balanced by the other things that I just mentioned. Good communication and conversation are really important to me. I have a very sharp wit and a dry sense of humor, and it has gotten me in trouble on a few occasions.
Some things I don't mind doing by myself: hiking, canoeing, seeing a movie. But there are other things I'd love to do...but not alone. Good company is always preferred, but it seems so hard to find.

I do not own a microwave nor a cell phone, and I am proud to say that I have avoided all current events and news stories since May 2011. Ignorance really is bliss sometimes.

But none the less I shall try. I work as a scientist, I work out at least three days a week - usually rock climbing, and I like to travel.
