Now, the facts...
I'm recently divorced. I was separated in April of 2010. I was married for 23 years.
I have two kids. One is a college junior in New York, the other is a high school junior here in the west San Fernando Valley. They are both avid, committed students. My daughter, a graphic design student, calls me often from lower Manhattan. My son lives with me. He's political and plays Jazz trumpet. Both are the joys of my life.
Dating has been an adventure in self-discovery. I've found that I have fairly good navigational skills. I like to talk, and like to listen. I laugh at the light as well as the dark. It's purgative and handled smartly, can be revealing and -- at times -- hilarious. It also opens up who we really are. I've found that I open up fairly readily, more so with someone who is like-minded. It can be a blessing and a curse!
I'm trained in the Arts. I was an Art major at Brandeis in the 1970s. I studied drawing, painting and history. In grad school I studied film production, post-production and writing. When I graduated from college, I moved to Brooklyn to set up a studio. I got a job in art supplies and painted in my free time. I loved New York, but soon fixed my sights on Los Angeles. I applied to film school and was accepted at USC. It was not a match made in heaven. But I learned from my experience and began to work in TV and film. Soon, post production found me, and I worked more and more in editorial. In 1989 I got a staff job at a studio and have been there ever since.
Parallel to this I began to serve on the Board of my union, the Editors Guild. I also write a labor news column for its magazine.
So, needless to say, I'm political. On the labor side, I'm a true believer. Unions, handled properly are a great mechanism for fair play in an otherwise undemocratic work environment.
Emotionally, I've found I like to give and nurture. I've been in a men's group for almost 18 years. I've "re-brothered" myself by re-experiencing how men express both care and anger. I've rediscovered how men emote. And I've re-discovered how to trust men. And maybe, by extension, how to trust women. Since I work in the film business and often see (and hear) a wide range of emotion, I am no stranger to it. It doesn't intimidate me. I'm fairly well attuned to voice inflections. I think I read people fairly well.
Dating has also made me aware of a nesting impulse, still stirring inside me! I like the company of women, especially women who honestly like men.
I would dare say I am available. I suspect I'm more like a (formerly) married guy than a single guy, but I'm interested in moving this new phase of my life forward. Who would have thought?
