I was always a little envious of those people who knew exactly what they wanted to do with their lives at an early age. I just had so many different interests- philosophy, music, science, math, economics, spirituality, psychology- I felt like I could have gone in a dozen different directions. In college, I chose to be an engineer, and as luck would have it, I hated it. I hated sitting behind my computer screen all day, by myself, engaged in something that had no real purpose in my mind.
Because I didn't know what I wanted to do, I spent most of my married life as a stay-at-home dad. And I loved it. I cooked, cleaned, learned how to set boundaries with the kids, took them to their music lessons and sports to fulfill my vision of raising them as whole people, with healthy minds, bodies, and spirits. In turn, they taught me a very valuable lesson: that even though they had no job title, income, accomplishments, or other trappings of what we think of as "social status", they were precious just for who they were. No one else in the world is exactly like them, and I took that to heart for myself as well. That is how I gained my confidence.
Over the past few years, with that new-found confidence, I have gradually been paying more attention to what my heart has been telling me, and the message has become loud and clear: stop living with fear, stop worrying about other people's opinions, be yourself and express yourself to the fullest. So now I am going back to school in the fall of 2012 to pursue my Master's degree in Counseling Psychology, a field that I believe fully integrates all of my interests and my passion for helping others.
