What I'm looking for? Beyond the basic human decency, respect, humor, a career you enjoy. I ask that you are familiar with yourself, I think we continue to evolve and we continue to grow but we should have a basic underlying sense of self. It helps. Easy going, thoughtful, considerate but not a pushover. Interests of your own, I'd love to be really good friends, even best friends, but I'm not the type to spend 24/7 with anyone. I think boys night out and girls night out are a healthy addition to a relationship. Hard to join at the hip with me since I'm kinda height challenged.
I'm not looking for perfection because I cannot offer the same, I am looking for acceptance of people in general. I find myself in an interesting situation in regards to dating. From the outside, the first thing people notice about me is the electric wheelchair I use. Because of this, many people immediately discount me as a date, partner, etc. Have you ever seen the Seinfeld episode "The Wink"? It's where Seinfeld declares 95% of the population “undateable!” based on the DMV. The wheelchair/disability is an immediate eliminating factor for lots of men. Come on, sometimes we're just looking for reasons, I've been guilty of it too.
The funny thing is, I think I’m very eligible – I’m attractive, funny, smart, interesting, I have a good job, own my own house. I’ve traveled 4 continents, I’m compassionate but with a good sense of boundaries, and while I won’t say I have no baggage, I am able to differentiate between mine and other’s. It’s difficult for me to reconcile being “undateable” with what I know about myself. I think in the past that’s led me to be defensive or apologetic about my disability. In reality, it’s an important facet of who I am (although not the only one) and it’s one of the most interesting things about me! With that in mind, I'm willing to try this again.
In terms of what I’m looking for, I try not to be too restrictive. I believe that what we need or what is best for us is sometimes different from what we think we want. A few important things though – I want a man of character, someone who won’t steal because no one is looking or who thinks it’s okay to bully service people. I want someone mature enough to take care of his own business. I can support myself, I expect you to be able to do the same for yourself. (Not that I’m against a little indulgence, both ways.) I want someone smart enough to know that almost every issue can be viewed from multiple viewpoints. And lastly, I want someone who’s capable of being positive, there’s a lot of dark in the world and a lot to be concerned with, but I hope you can take joy from a good meal, an unexpected view from BART, or a fun outing with a friend.
