With a separation after nineteen years and a divorce pending, the ocean, the hills and the silent roads have once again proven themselves as places for solitude and companionship and deep contemplation

Having cycle-toured around the world and across this country, having surfed in both hemispheres, and backpacked through Asia and South Pacific Islands, these events have shaped my world view and how I see the importance of life and living. As I arise in the morning and ride to work in the dark, Henry David Thoreau's thoughts resonate with me. When I sit outside the surf zone awaiting the approach of another set of waves, the ideas implicit in Thoreau's journals clarify what too often seem a hectic and amplified world
