We seem to forget the formalities in this sped up digital age, so I simply start with Hello. How are you? How was your day? Would you care for a glass of wine or how about some tea? Speaking of tea, have you ever been to Turkey where the shop owners in villages big and small send out for hot tea? You must experience that at some point if you haven't already. Nearly twenty years ago I threw a backpack on and spent 6 months roaming through Europe, including Greece, and then on through Turkey. In a small town near Ephesus, I spent the afternoon sketching the storefront of a Turkish rug merchant. Curious as to my drawing, the shop owner repeatedly sent his young assistant to offer me hot tea. A kind gesture to say the least. Upon finishing the drawing I gave it to the owner as a gift. To my surprise he immediately sent it off to be framed and then grabbed a hanging kilim and gave it to me as a gift in return. The kindness of strangers??? Ah but I see I have digressed. I was asking you about your day? I hope it was peaceful, productive, abundant. My day was good, thank you. I was lucky to surf a bit this morning and was gifted with a small pod of dolphins playing nearby. That, for me, is always like a gift from god. How blessed are those of us who live close to nature? Speaking of nature, one of the ways I spend my days is to paint it, literally. Since relocating to Hermosa Beach from the SF Bay Area two years ago, I have refound a love of landscape painting and now seem to be devoting time to this art form as well as others. I am lucky in that I get to make my living through art, be it a painting, a commissioned mural, or painting surfaces to look like exotic woods and marbles, and so on and so forth. Days are full. Books are read. Friends are spoken with. Days are good. And you? I wonder what makes your heart beat in excitement? What do you burn for? Have you kept alive your dreams? I hope so. Do you enjoy design? What do you think of the Gehry building in downtown LA? My buddy used to live on Gehry's boat back in art school. But that was before Gehry became the man he is known to be today. Do you ever get to the art museums or galleries here in LA? Hey, would you like to go sometime? LAMOCA just had a great show on contemporary abstract art. Or perhaps you saw the Richard Diebenkorn show recently down in Newport at the Orange County Museum of Art? What a great show! One of my best memories with art was with my now thirteen year old son, who lives with his mom in NorCal. When he was a little guy, we set up canvasses and started throwing objects dipped in paint at the canvasses. We both loved it, and he sort of couldn't believe it was ok to do what we were doing. I learned much about art through his eyes in his early years. I still use matchbox cars dipped in paint and rolled around the canvas - something he taught me from a nursury school project. So I guess I say all this to simply say life is a big adventure. I can learn from both schooled peers as well as little kids. The point I think is to try to keep the heart and soul open to the world as we get older. I am looking for women who share some of these ideas. Maybe you might join me in closing your eyes by the seashore, the sun setting, and simply feeling the water washing up against your barefeet, thus being reminded of the simple things in life...Cheers...
