Date a woman from California, United States. I HATE being called elderly! I much prefer the term Old-Timer! I still do my own housework, shopping, cooking and work an occasional home-care visit whenever my employer calls me (I am an RN). I find it ludicrous to be getting phone calls from companies who obviously are tailored to my age bracket. (No I am NOT a diabetic. No I do NOT have need of a cane, walker, wheelchair or stair lift)....OMG PLEASE SPARE ME! My house is under water, but I am still managing to pay my mortgage on time, My goal is to live to be 100 & still be the same person I have become over my lifetime. My life has NEVER been dull; as my headline states,"Right now a little boredom wouldn't come amiss".
I have raised 7 children, not a drug-addict among them. My kids mean the world to me but I have a strict non-interference policy with their adult lives. One child is autistic but is very high-functioning. Most of them live in Illinois and 2 live in California, as do I.
My mother had a serious mental illness, so I raised my 2 younger brothers, since Dad was a coping alcoholic (ie. went to work every day hung-over but not drunk, binged on the weekends). If I were married to that woman, she would have driven a saint to drink! So I became a control freak in many aspects of my life.
My social life is non-existent since I was forced to retire before I was ready! Retirement just does not work for me, this is my second try at it & it STILL does not work. I have no nest-egg to travel, or do volunteer work. These "Golden Years" SUCK BIG TIME!
I would like to meet another Old-Timer who is not ready to throw in the towel just yet! Unlike most of my contemporaries, I love my computer and all the newest technologies that once were in the realm of science-fiction.
What a glorious time to have been born; before WWII, through the Big Band era, Korea, the Kennedy years, voyage to the Moon, and all of the rapid advancements of the last 3 decades of the 20th Century).
Of course, mankind has gotten burnt often enough to become suspicious, isolated, self-centered and somewhat hard-hearted. Too many charities have used donations under false pretenses. Too many public officials maintain a narrow point of view and refuse to look at what will benefit the majority and not just their constituents. Too many leaders have blantantly lied (sometimes under oath) with seeming impunity. Big Brother IS HERE and he is watching. But Orwell never foresaw that social networking would be the biggest "watcher" of all. "We have met the enemy and he is US!"
The only things that bind us together as human beings are tragedies; (9-11, tsunamis earthquakes, floods). But in every day life, it has become every man for himself!
So, if you care to discuss anything other than our aches, pains, and limitations as aging Americans, I would love to hear from you; even if you disagree with me, there is nothing more stimulating than exchange of views and ideas! A little companionship would not hurt either!
