. Sharing the adventure of life with another person can enhance the journey, or, make it a challenge. When it comes to finding a "significant other", there's nothing more important to me than a solid friendship. Friendship without chemistry = friendship. Chemistry without friendship = disaster. But, I believe in going slow and spending lots of time just getting to know each other. The more you know each other, the less likely it will be for any unpleasant surprises later on. If the connection falls apart while in the process of learning about each other, then, there's really not a connection. Chemistry is necessary for a happy, lasting relationship. But, all too often, I've allowed myself to be swept away by the physical aspects of the relationship, and after a time, realized there was little,or, nothing else to keep the connection flowing. My first and last priority is HONOR. This word seems to be all but extinct now days. But, I have learned that without INTEGRITY, there's no reason to spend time with someone. Of course, it takes awhile to find out what a person's values are...but, to me, its worth the wait. I believe all worthwhile relationships should be based on mutual respect, honesty, loyalty and when needed, compassion. If these qualities are present, there's a foundation for something meaningful. The next thing I look for is common core values, shared activities and like interests. I can usually tell if there's chemistry with someone right away, but, that spark can burn its self off pretty quick if there's nothing else going on...
I'm generally happy, easy going and a little on the quiet side because I believe that if I can't find something positive or, somewhat intelligent to say, then I'd rather not say anything at all. But, communication is of the utmost importance to me. Every relationship has it's challenges. If you can't talk through your issues and resolve them, then its just a matter of time before resentment builds a wall around your heart and the love will no longer be able to penetrate. No one is perfect. So, forgiveness is a crucial skill. No one is capable of sustaining a bullet proof self esteem. So, compassion is crucial. No one's life goes exactly the way they want it too at all times. So, empathy is crucial. No one does the right thing all the time. So, patience is crucial.
In my ideal relationship, my partner and I would share the activities we enjoy doing together, but, we would each have our own interests as well. We would be together most evenings, but, take time apart to pursue lives of our own. We would nurture each other physically, emotionally and spiritually. We would be supportive of each other's dreams and endeavors... We would love all the perfect things we see in the other. And, we would love their imperfections even more... And though we might occasionally bring to the attention of the other person something that may be of some concern to us, we always...always choose to look for what is good and right about the other rather than criticize them for what they are not...We would travel together. Anything from a romantic weekend at a B&B or camping to a tour across Africa. But, no matter where we are, lingering eye contact, soft kisses, and never missing an opportunity for a warm touch would be primary characteristics of our time together...
I believe in the power of love, the law of attraction, and, recycling. Communication is paramount when there is an issue, but, sometimes a loving touch says more than a thousand words. Quality time alone together is necessary on a daily basis, but, there needs to be time spent with family and friends as well.
My plans for the future include: Diving with Whale Sharks in the Galapagos Islands. Dancing Tango in the streets of Argentina. And, creating a more sustainable life style so that most of what I eat comes from my own garden. And, most of all, a partner who can take my heart's breath away, even after 50 years together.
